| The Cantal region
of the Auvergne is situated just off the Massif Central and
is an area rich in natural beauty. The intense colours of
the Cantal countryside leave a lasting impression. The turquoise
skies contrast perfectly with the lush green valleys where
the horned Salers cows graze idly in the sunshine.
Aurillac is the main town of the Cantal. It has many windy,
narrow streets full of interesting boutiques. There is a large
indoor market selling fresh and local produce and a medieval
area which surrounds the cathedral.
There are several lakes and reservoirs in Cantal which are
relatively wild and unspoilt. These provide a perfect location
to do most watersports and enjoy peaceful, life guarded beaches.
Around the lakes are many walking and mountain bike tracks.
If you prefer to hike or bike in the mountains then head up
to the peaks of Cantal, the highest being Puy St. Mary (1787m)
where from the summit one can observe a captivating panorama.
The region also has many rivers and is considered to be amongst
the best places in France to fish attracting a great many
anglers.
The pace of life in Cantal is pleasantly relaxing and tranquil,
the hot summer days and long warm evenings makes it a perfect
place to own a holiday home. The local people are very friendly
and there are plenty of local markets and fêtes throughout
the area offering an array of delicious produce and traditions.
